Nelson is Chief Privacy Officer at Stanford University. Nelson oversees the University Privacy Office, which you can find more information about here.

Prior to joining Stanford, Nelson served as Acting Chief Data Privacy Officer and Senior Privacy Compliance Officer at the World Bank for three years. Prior to joining the World Bank, Nelson served as the first Data Protection Officer for Crown Worldwide Group from 2005 to 2020. Nelson designed and took the global privacy program for the Crown group to maturity in 60 countries. Nelson has also developed expertise in data privacy automation techniques to enhance speed, efficiency, and consistency in conducting privacy assessments.

Nelson assisted the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in designing a compliance program to fit its data protection policy. In addition, Nelson has provided privacy advice and guidance to various international organizations and routinely advises Chief Privacy Officers globally. Nelson also speaks at conferences and seminars on privacy issues.

Nelson has a J.D. from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is admitted to the bar in Florida, Texas, and the U.S. Supreme Court, but he no longer practices law. Nelson holds a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) certification.
